Think you have 10 minutes to make a first impression? Think again.

Within the first seven seconds in which you meet somebody, according to an article in Forbes magazine, is when you’ll make a “ first impression”.  So whether it's for your business or social life, it's important to know how to create a good first impression.

Some people don’t notice handshakes but there are many of us who read a great deal into them. We can tell when someone is conceited, afraid, nervous, weak or strong and are offended by wimpy handshakes (yet annoyed at overly aggressive handshakes).

Whether you are in your career or social life, it's important to know how to create a good first impression - here are useful tips to help you do this:

Smile
Facial expressions are very important when it comes to making a good first impression. Who doesn’t want their personal brand to be associated with positivity?

Not only does smiling make others feel more comfortable around you , but it also decreases stress hormones, according to research.  Since the need to make a positive first impression can increase your stress level, smiling is a way to take the edge off.

The Right Handshake
The handshake is accepted internationally as a professional sign of politeness.  A proper handshake can convey confidence.

You might be rolling your eyes at this, but the handshake is a fine art.  You want to walk the line between a squeeze that comes across incredibly tight and the dreaded limp fish.  Or some people think the only thing worse than a dead limp hand shake is one with rough and dry skin.

Be on Time
Someone you are meeting for the first time is not interested in your "good excuse" for running late. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. And allow flexibility for possible delays in traffic or taking a wrong turn. Arriving early is much better that arriving late, hands down, and is the first step in creating a great first impression.

Be Yourself, Be at Ease
If you are feeling uncomfortable and on edge, this can make the other person not feel at ease and that's a sure way to create the wrong impression. If you are calm and confident, the other person will feel more at ease, thus having a good foundation for making that first impression a good one.
