4 TIPS TO HELP HANDLE THE UNCERTAINTY OF 2022

I don’t know about you guys but I’ve always known the start of the new year to be filled usually with hope and great expectations.  It’s normally the time when people make grand resolutions and map out plans to accomplish their goals. But for the past two years the feeling of uncertainty stemming from the pandemic has put a damper on the aspirations of many.

I know we’re all tired of hearing about the uncertain times we’re living in.  The “new normal” still doesn’t feel normal – and, at this point, it’s not quite “new” either.  But we keep talking and writing about these unprecedented times because we need to do more than simply find a way through.   All in all, we need to find ways to grow and thrive and work to make things better than they were before.  Opportunities can present themselves at any time, and often do in periods of uncertainty

So, how do we handle the uncertainty of 2022?.....Below are some tips to help:

1. Remembering what’ we’ve learned in the last few years
Since 2020, we’ve seen how adaptable we can be when the gauntlet is laid down by the pandemic.  While it’s difficult to know what 2022 has in store, it’s important to remember the resilience we’ve built and how we were able to make things work when we had to.

We made remote working for us, and where that wasn’t possible, we made our worksites safer through safe working practices.

2. Focus on what you can control
Begin 2022 with a positive outlook by focusing on the things that can be controlled

As Philospher, Epictetus wrote “

“Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not. The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. 

Trying to control or change what isn’t within your control will only drain your energy and leave you in torment. What you can control is how you perceive a situation, how you react to it, and how you respond.

3.  Try a grounding technique
Another strategy to help manage uncertainty is to try to be present in here and now, not so much with thoughts or feelings, but with the physical sensations of the present moment.  Grounding can involve quite literally getting closer to the earth (feeling your feet on the ground, for example), or it can involve paying attention to other senses through taking actions like putting your hands in water, or focusing on an object in a room, or tuning in to ambient sounds (like traffic)

4. Invest in yourself
The best resource that you have right now for making a contribution to the world is YOU.  When that resources is depleted, your most valuable asset is damaged.  In other words: when we underinvest in our bodies and minds, we destroy our most essential tools for leading our best lives.
